Why Newsweeks Dress Code is Right on the Mark

Why Newsweeks Dress Code is Right on the Mark Why Newsweeks Dress Code is Right on the Mark We could replace “Newsweek” with just about any company name, but here’s the gist of the policy: “Denim jeans, sweat suits, low-rise pants, sneakers, sandals, flip-flops, halter tops, camisoles, baseball caps, sweat suits, t-shirts, tank tops, micro mini-skirts, shorts, or anything else that is deemed unprofessional or excessively distracting are inappropriate business attire and should not be worn to work.” On social media platforms, comments on the leak range from “…adults working in a professional environment should dress professionally” to “I think dress codes for adults are just stupid…” There is no dress code that will make everybody happy, but they are important. Let’s take a closer look at this often-debated subject. 1. The intent is positive You, as an employee, may feel that a dress code is restricting. I have heard, “My company says they are open to diversity, yet they want us all to dress alike.” Actually, your company IS open to diversity, so they want to avoid anybody or anything from offending someone else. It is not only things we say that can that can be offensive, so can the things we wear. We work for globally diverse companies, and many things can be offensive to various cultures. For example, some people dont want to see undergarments of any kind, cleavage, often-unkempt toes, etc. As for casual attire (sweatpants, baseball caps), wear those at night and on weekends all you want. Work is called work for a reason. It is the place that compensates us to work in THEIR environment, abiding by their values, rules, policies, and helping them build THEIR brand. If certain elements of your company’s brand are the color of the paint on the walls and how people dress, that is their decision. You may elect to not work there if the requirements are not comfortable for you. 2. Dress code challenges transcend gender and generations As a manager, I have had to have dress code conversations with men and women, and I have had to have them with baby boomers (born 1946-1964), Gen X-ers (born 1965-1976), and Millennials (born 1977-1992). Within each generation there is a wide continuum of conservative to liberal attitudes and as many interpretations of the type of dress that is appropriate enough or professional enough. I’m sure there are some senior executives who are equally challenged with Newsweeks new dress code. 3. More clothing choices are appropriate and professional than are inappropriate and unprofessional There is a wide range of clothes that are acceptable, allowing individuals to express their creativity and uniqueness. Just look around you. There are colors, fabrics, combinations, styles and accessories that bring out a sense of individuality while still providing appropriate dress for work. A wardrobe can be low-cost, second-hand, or vintage and still be acceptable. 4. Do you really think your attire or a dress code makes you less cool, less creative, less important or less interesting? First impressions are truly lasting, so why be labeled before you even show your talents? Like those required at some grade schools and high schools, I often wish we wore a uniform at work so we would be judged (and compensated!) on how we meet or exceed our job requirements. Period. In today’s new era of work, I believe the No. 1 career word is “choices.” We are all empowered to make choices, that is, when we have choices. You can choose to work for a technology startup that says, “Wear whatever you want.” Or you can work for a company with a brand that requires a certain level of dress standard. Or you can start your own business and wear whatever you want! What is your opinion? We want to hear it! We look forward to your comments!

On voluntarily giving up $67k, and whats next - When I Grow Up

On voluntarily giving up $67k, and whats next - When I Grow Up My collaborations are kaput. In the spring of 2015, branding coach Tiffany Han, graphic designer Erin Cassidy and I launched  Its Business Time, a 6-month program that walked its participants through the discovery and launch phase of their business. We ran it once a year for three years, and it was a solid money-making offer, as well as one I had lots of fun running with my friends. In the summer of 2016, career coach Laura Simms and I launched  90 Day Business Launch, a program that took the jumbled What and How of the participants dream business, found the intersection of what they wanted to offer and what was marketable, and gave them a detailed business plan. It included a 3-month Launch League to offer guided help, coaching, and support through launch day. It was my biggest money-making program for 2017, and Laura and I were killing it when it came to writing really detailed, on-the-nose plans. We didnt have 1 participant ever tell us we missed the mark in 46 plans.   And yet: Tiff, Erin and I decided that the last round of  Its Business Time that ended last September would be our last. And then: Laura said this round of  90 Day Business Launch needed to be her last. And heres the thing: Its all amicable. Its all okay. Its all exactly right. On the surface, this makes no sense. The participants were showing up, and we loved working with them all. Seeing their ideas go from a tiny seed to real, tangible businesses was and is! extremely satisfying. These offers were making real money, with the potential to grow. The programs were aligned with our business missions and made sense under our individual and collective umbrellas. But something had felt off. With  Its Business Time, we were poised in 2017 to take it up to 3x as many participants (and money) as we had previously. Now that we had the experience and data from 2 years of running the program, we re-jigged the structure so we could drop the price and welcome more people while being confident theyd get the same results. Our launch for this program was intense, and left us totally depleted and exhausted the opposite of the energy we want to feel around our business.   In addition to the launch prep, the 6-month timeline of the program meant we couldnt put energy towards other offers and products that had started coming into focus for each of us individually since wed started the program.   We  were all craving a different path for ourselves,    and agreed that it was best to put  It’s Business Time  to bed. I learned so much from Lauras decision with  90 Day Business Launch, which I agreed with but wouldnt necessarily have been brave enough to pull the trigger on. Shes making big changes to her business, and the work we were doing here would take her away from her own business goals. I could say the same, and yet I prioritized the safety blanket the program provided instead of going all in on the new direction my business is going. But Lauras decision made me look at a hard truth: Because we wanted to do all we could to lead all 10 of our clients to a 90 day business launch, we added more and more value to each round. While we loved raising the success rates of our participants, we realized that we added dozens of hours to this program that we didnt account for. Although this was a financially successful program overall, we were losing money on our time, and couldnt find the grey area without putting in dozens of planning and execution hours that we dont have. Initially, we were planning to  close up shop after our current participants launch on April 4th. But because Laura told me I could run this on my own, I started wondering how I could make this work for  me.  What would need to change so I can still deliver these results to my clients, but in a framework that works for my preferences, mission and goals? I came up with something totally dynamic and next-level for me, and I ran it by Laura. She gave me her blessing, and Ill move forward to pick up 90 Day Business Launch on my own starting this spring. And now, as Tiffany said to me the other day: This is the beginning of the birth of THE MICHELLE SHOW! I can feel it! I can, too. My Dear Future Me letter is coming true, and I just keep breathing through the fear and the excitement. Things here are evolving, and Im ready. Im standing on my own two feet as a business owner, focusing on an abundance mindset and all the proven results I have behind me as a creative career coach since 2008. And now, I proudly announce my new solo program,  Discover Your Dream Biz. This is where I know I can help multi-passionate, creative women who want to be business owners clarify what the heck theyd actually offer. Im (finally!) able to do it now in the space between a $99 on-demand class and a $4k+ one-on-one coaching program. Click here to learn more, and quick. Applications will be open through Friday, but as Ill be accepting them on a rolling basis and spots are super limited, it might not last that long. I can also confidently say that the price wont be this low again. With a deep breath, I can stand here and say that there is nobody like me doing this work in this way. Im insanely thrilled to add a program like this to my business offerings. Honestly, its about damn time.

6 Tips That Will Get You Hired Before the End of Summer - Jobscan Blog

6 Tips That Will Get You Hired Before the End of Summer - Jobscan BlogPosted on June 13, 2017November 15, 2018 by Tomas Ondrejka Are you a fresh graduate trying to find your first real job after college? Do you feel slightly uneasy when you look at all that empty space on your college student resume? Have you already applied for several jobs but youve yet to score a single interview? What if I told you that your lack of experience isnt the main aufgabe? After all, everyone has skills and knowledge to show off. The biggest challenge is to discover and transcribe these skills and experiences into words in the right way. Still, writing a resume is no rocket sciencetheres no reason to feel intimidated. If you follow the simple guidelines below, youll easily get hired before the end of this summer. 1. Figure out why youd excel in this positionMany fresh graduates are understandably unsure whether they have what it takes for a job. Yet, adopting a self-confident mindset from the start is a bsolutely crucial if you want to succeed. Before you start writing your resume, sit down and try to think of 4-5 reasons why youd excel in the job youre applying for. Write them down in detail, it will help you articulate who you are as a candidate. Youll have a much easier time writing your resume once youve asked yourself all the important questions. Moreover, it will also help you succeed at the interview. 2. Do your research and tailor your resume to every jobTheres no such thing as a one-size-fits-all resume. If you want to be seen as a great fit for a position, your resume needs to meet the positions specific requirements. Create several different resumes. Always begin by carefully rereading the job offer and identify the fruchtwein important skills needed for the job, which you can easily do using Jobscan. Make sure your resume corresponds to these requirements. Even more importantly, research every company youre approaching. At the end of the day, you should know everything a bout their core business, company culture, and even their hiring managers (LinkedIn is great for that). Once you have a clear picture, you can easily adjust your resume to fit their expectations.3. Highlight your transferrable skillsLack of experience doesnt have to be an unsurmountable obstacle either. Perhaps you didnt have enough foresight to do an internship. Still, youve just spent several years in college learning things. All you have to do is to articulate it now. Many of the skills youve acquired in college may not be obviously related to the position youre applying for. In your studies, youve probably also demonstrated competence in skills such as time management, oral and written communication, fundraising, or public speaking. Dont forget to include these transferrable skills in your resume together with specific examples of how you used these skills in college or during internships.4. Choose the right resume formatIf youve already tried to write a chronological resume, you ve probably realised how painfully empty it looks. Still, you can remove much of the anxiety by choosing the right resume format. After all, even if you dont have much experience yet, it doesnt mean you have no skills. Write a functional resume instead. This resume format highlights your skills much more effectively than a classic chronological resume. For this reason, it works especially well for recent graduates such as yourself. Finally, you might also want to consider using one of the verbunden resume builders such as Kickresume, they will help you structure your resume if you dont know where to start.5. Keep it relevantA resume is not a confessional, it shouldnt be about yourself. Instead, it needs to be about an employer youre approaching. Resume has to show the employer that someone with your skills and experience is best-suited to solve the problems that come with a given position. This can be a bit tricky. After all, even seemingly unrelated experiences can help give a bette r idea of what kind of a candidate you are. Still, theres no way that something like taking a French class in high school (or high school as such) is still relevant. Scrap it.6. Make your resume fit one pageYour resume has to fit on one page. Period. Especially as an entry-level candidate, theres simply no chance you could make use of two pages effectively.Perhaps youve already heard that recruiters usually spent about 6 seconds on each resume. You only have about 6 seconds to make a lasting impression. The shortness of this time is the reason why your resume should also be short. Remember, no ones going to read the second page.Tomas Ondrejkais the co-founder atKickresume worlds most advanced career documents builder with more than 400K users around the world. Is Professionalism Subjective

Is Professionalism Subjective Professionalism. Merriam Websters Dictionary tells us this means the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person. Then what is a profession and what does it mean to be a professional person? Professional of, relating to, or characteristic of a profession.Profession a calling requiring specialized knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation. So from the looks of it, a profession is a calling. This is rather interesting and a point to take note of as Ill surely come back to this. Now when we think of being unprofessional, specifically in the workplace, an array of things come to mind. Lets take a look at the most obviousBeing rude to customers, colleagues and/or superiors (although the latter could result in job termination).Using profanity and crude language when speaking to customers and/or colleagues.Comm ents and/or jokes that can be considered offensive those pertaining to an individuals race, gender, religious affiliations or sexual orientation.Verbal arguments and physical altercations.Tardiness and extensive absences.Sleeping on the job (In June, 8 TSA officials were fired for this).Being loud or obnoxious while working constantly disturbing others.Dressing inappropriately with too loose or too tight clothing. Looking unkept, disheveled and messy. Similarly, an unorganized and cluttered workspace can show signs of unprofessionalism as well.Gossiping and telling lies.A list of how not to act could go on and on. Yet, I wonder what happens when you become more specific and the professionalism line isnt as clear. For example, is it unprofessional for a person to display his or her religious beliefs while at work? Many people put quotes and/or phrases on business cards and email signatures. What happens when they delve into religion? Is it suitable to include a scripture from the bib le or a verse from the Quran on yur business card, or is this practice now unprofessional?During my junior year of college, a professor told me I should remove the scripture I had in my email signature because, as a journalist, youre supposed to be neutral. My emails signature was unprofessional. She was partially correct journalists are supposed to be neutral (although that is unrealistic because everyone has biases), but although I was a journalism major, I was not nor desired to ever become a journalist.Still pertaining to religion in the workplace, what about praying over, giving thanks or blessing food before consumption, as many religious practices encourage? It is unprofessional for someone to do this when in the company of others? Say during a meeting, conference or company gathering?I also wonder where the line is drawn with unprofessional appearance. There is an unspoken rule about how an individual should look in the workplace. What about culture-specific attire including headpieces and colorful garments? And hair colors such as green, blue, orange and purple are most often considered unprofessional, but are they truly? Numerous tattoos and body piercings send red flags for most employers, but others may not deem them unprofessional. We discovered earlier that a profession is a calling, or something deep inside that pushes us in a certain direction. I believe we all have a specific calling for some it is to teach, and for others it may be managing a group of people. If our profession is our calling and answering this call makes us a professional, then our day-to-day actions as a professional produce professionalism. What did I just say?The bottom line is that professionalism isnt black and white, but it varies in color. To be professional depends on the environment we work in the culture of the New York Stock exchange dictates the companys professionalism standards. The same is true for the Walt Disney Company, yet both would have totally different c oncepts of what it means for employees to be professional.Appearance, cultural and religious practices, interacting with customers and co-workers Although there seems to be a common belief on what is and is not professional in these areas, in reality, the deciding factors fluctuate.Im interested to see others perspectives. Share your thoughts on whether or not you think professionalism is subjective.
